Playing Along (Awakenings 5)

Stephen Galen is a certified Nice Guy when it comes to dealing with women, and he’d found out the hard way that Nice Guys finish last. Burned by love one time too many, he wasn’t looking for anything except a casual liaison.

Paget Draven never let an experience pass her by, so when she has the chance to have a casual affair with the man she’s lusted after for two years, she seizes the day.

Being with a Dominatrix was unlike anything Stephen had ever experienced. The more he played along with her scintillating and sexy scenarios, the thinner the boundary became between real life and their playacting. Pushing her away was the only solution to keeping his heart safe.

But life doesn’t always follow even the most careful plan. When devastating news rocks Paget’s world, Stephen must decide whether to stand by her or lose her forever.

Flaming hot, sweet, funny, and heart-rending, Playing Along is a messy, emotional tale of life, love, and fighting for happiness when everything is on the line.

Excerpt

“Put your hands behind the chair.”

I sat still while she went behind the chair and used my tie to bind my wrists together. “Is this necessary? I hadn’t planned to touch you.”

“It’s necessary, Stephen. I want our first kiss to knock your socks off.”

It was a kiss, something brief and fleeting, not a reason for bondage. I opened my mouth to tell her that, but she pressed a finger to my lips.

“Quiet darling. If you persist in speaking, I’ll have to gag you.” With that, she unbuttoned the top two buttons on my shirt.

“Paget, this is a little much. I’d rather we both kept our clothes on.”

“No clothes will be removed, baby. I promise.”

She kept calling me ‘baby.’ I wasn’t sure how I felt about that. She also unbuttoned my shirt the rest of the way. I knew I should tell her to stop and to untie me, but I couldn’t bring myself to halt her game. She was assertive, and she’d skillfully controlled our interaction.

“Nice,” she said. “You have a smoking hot body, Stephen.” She pressed her hands to my abdomen and dragged them up my chest.

“This isn’t a kiss.” I’d meant to point out that she was going overboard, but there was too much wonder in my tone to make it stick.

She reached under her dress, wiggled, and her panties fell down her legs.

Before I could remind her that she’d promised no clothing would come off, she shoved them into my mouth. Then she tapped my lower lip. “Naughty boys are gagged with used panties. Suck on that like a good boy until I take them out.”

They were silk and tiny, and I could spit them out if I wanted, but I kept them where she’d put them. I could taste the barest hint of her essence, enough to know she was aroused by this scene.

My chair was padded, and it fit me well. Still Paget managed to straddle my lap. Her knees sank into the padding on either side of my thighs. She hiked up her dress to sit down, which showed me nothing, but I swore I could feel the heat of her pussy through my pants.

Before I could think to protest, her hands were on me again. They moved over my chest in sensual swirls. Her lips skated up and down my neck, across my cheeks, and over my eyelids. They were soft and moist, and I’d never been so fucking turned on in my life.

She nipped at my earlobe. “You’re being very good, Stephen. Soon, I’m going to take out the gag, and you’re going to ask very nicely for a kiss, and you’re going to call me Mistress.”

Her breath tickled my ear, sending shivers through my body. She spent more time teasing her lips over my skin—never quite kissing, but arousing me all the same. Then her mouth brushed mine. She caught the edge of her panties in her teeth, and she pulled them from my mouth.

You’d think my mouth would be dry, but that was only true for a second. Saliva rushed to fill the space in anticipation of something unlike anything I’d experienced.

She let them fall between us. They landed on my swollen cock. The weight was no more than that of a cloth napkin, and yet I felt it press like the caress of her hand.

“I think you like me, Stephen.”

Dragon Kisses #1: Claimed by the Zmaj
Waking up in a strange barn was just the tip of the iceberg. Cassie and Niall find themselves transported to another world, one full of dragon shifters who want to possess them. Cassie is claimed by Illion, an electric blue dragon who shifts into five hulking men, and Niall is claimed by Wynn, a lime green dragon who shifts into two men and two women.

The Zmaj feed from the sexual energy of humans, and finding a cache of five in an abandoned barn is a momentous occasion. Convincing them to stay and protecting them from the Inamanida, their sworn enemy, is another task altogether. And falling in love? Zmaj don’t do that.

When Cassie runs away, Illion is forced to confront his prejudices and his brethren in order to save her from a fate worse than death.

Dragon Kisses #2: Claimed by the Enemy

Waking with no memory, Arabella finds herself courted by three men claiming to be her mates. Dragon shifters Tobin, Gerrit, and Blakely woo her with sweet words and deeds, convincing her that she’s always lived this fairy tale existence. Life is perfect until the Inamanida King decides the experiment has gone on long enough—and Tobin is ordered to turn Arabella over to be tortured and used by the entire clan.

Meanwhile Jonathan is working to help settle the humans in Zmaj’s outer city. As the son of a prominent human leader, finds himself thrust into a leadership role and having to liaise with creatures he was raised to fear. Soon he falls for Laurel, a beautiful woman recently arrived from Earth, but as secrets emerge, he faces a stark truth that could cost him everything.

Tobin and Jonathan must risk everything and deal with consequences that could cost them the fragile relationships they’ve built with the women they love.

Dragon Kisses #3: Dragon War
In the months following Jonathan’s transformation, Laurel struggles to come to terms with her feelings for him and the horrific memories of time spent as a dragon’s slave. Jonathan struggles to be patient, but Laurel’s fear is breaking his heart. Niall and Cassie open a popular bakery and revel in the bliss of love and their new lives. Arabella pines for Tobin’s aspects to be reunited, and Nora discovers the secret of creating Zmaj offspring.

Meanwhile all Zmaj braces for the Inamanida attack that Tobin warned them about. When it finally comes, the Zmaj find themselves vastly outnumbered by enemy forces. In the violence that follows, everything changes.

Swept Away (Bear’s Cove 4)

Swept Away by an handsome alpha and a rogue wave, Gideon must fight for survival—and for love.

Love—at what cost?

Gideon McGraw has worked hard at having a successful career. Getting involved with a client is a sure way to sink that ship.

The moment he set eyes on the sexy pharmaceutical rep, Dr. Darren “Hutch” Hutchinson knew he’d met his mate.

Stranded

Hutch makes his move at a charity event. Before he can convince Gideon to take a chance on love, their boat capsizes. With everything on the line, Hutch must beat nature or lose it all.

Welcome to Bear’s Cove, a hidden community of gay bear shifters. Swept Away is a 28,000-word, gay male pregnancy romance that includes passionate and explicit sexual content.

Excerpt 1:

Doctor McQuade’s eyes sparkled. “Not ready to settle down yet?”

Gideon was more than ready to settle down, but he hadn’t found the right alpha. Flashing a quick smile, Gideon said, “I like not being tied down.”

As he realized what he said could be construed as a double entendre, especially as they had been talking about Kofi’s kinky romance novels, Gideon blushed again.

“You don’t like being tied down? That’s a tragedy.” A new voice, deep and resonant, sounded from behind Gideon.

He turned to see a man with the most mesmerizing, golden-brown eyes Gideon had ever come across. They pulled at him, making him want to close the distance between them so he could gaze into them properly. He noticed the man’s full lips that were a little darker brown than his smooth skin, and he couldn’t help but imagine nibbling on them.

After an awkward amount of time, Gideon remembered where he was and what he was doing. He crossed to the newcomer with his hand extended. “I’m Gideon McGraw from Ursine Innovations.”

The man stared into Gideon’s eyes, and Gideon forgot to breathe. Then he closed his hands around Gideon’s, encasing them in strong, alpha goodness. He smiled briefly. “I’m Doctor Hutchinson. Thanks for coming today. I just got here. I need to do a couple things first, but you go ahead and start, and I’ll be along as soon as I can.”

Excerpt 2:

Before he could process his intention, Hutch launched himself over the tilted railing, willing his body to follow Gideon’s, but the omega had disappeared, and everything was shrouded in black skies and driving sheets of rain.

The shock of cold water made his body freeze. Even his brain had ceased to think. His lungs burned, and he felt like they were going to burst. Kicking hard, he pushed to where he thought the surface might be, hoping he was right. After far too long, his head broke through, and he gulped precious breaths of air. The driving rain made him inhale water, and his lungs went into paroxysms.

Seconds passed, and his mind started working again.

Gideon.

His omega was out there somewhere, and he needed to find him.

Treading water, he turned in a slow circle. The storm was more powerful now, the rain blinding him, and he was engaged in a constant struggle to keep his head above water.

He couldn’t see the boat.

He couldn’t even see land.

“Gideon!” He called his mate’s name, but the wind stole the word and hurled it back in his face as if punishing him for fucking up in the first place. A wave slammed over his head, forcing him underwater. Never fight instinct. You wanted him from the first moment. You ran away because you thought you didn’t deserve any kind of happiness, not when a little girl was fighting for her life and you couldn’t save her. In punishing yourself, you lost your mate.

Gideon.

My omega.

Soft sand and hard rocks dug into his knees. With the last of his sanity, he crouched down to push off the bottom, and he rocketed to the surface. The water was too shallow. He had to be near land. Driving rain obscured everything, but he glimpsed smudges of greenery. With everything he had, he pushed his body through the churning water.

After forever, his feet hit a tangle of wood. Trees and bushes, limbs twisted together, formed a shoreline. Hutch pulled himself up out of the water and onto a tangle. He looked out over the water, the pounding rain rendering everything indistinct, like a runny watercolor painting.

Then he saw it. A head bobbing on the waves. A hint of orange life vest. An arm flailing in the air. It disappeared for a moment, and then it came back up. In his gut, he knew it was a person. Without hesitating, he dove into the water and swam toward the floundering man. In his heart, he knew it had to be Gideon.

Fate couldn’t be so cruel.

Fighting through the wind and churning water, he made his way toward the figure. Before he got there, the head slipped below the surface and didn’t come back up. Fear sliced through him, white-hot and icy-cold, and he dove beneath the waves. Under there, things were calmer, albeit darker. The storm blocked most of the light from the sky, and the violent waves churned the waters into a muddy mess.

Trusting his trajectory, he kicked harder. His hand hit something soft. He had one chance. The first fragile fingers of fear scratched at the back of his mind, but he shoved them away. Right now, there was no time to indulge in that emotion. Hoping with everything he had, he grabbed hold and surged toward the surface. Breaking hard, he gulped air as he pulled his charge up.

Gideon’s head lolled against Hutch’s shoulder. His eyes were closed, and his pallor set off alarm bells in Hutch’s head. He slapped Gideon’s cheeks, but the omega didn’t respond.

Unable to rouse his omega, he flipped to his back, hauled Gideon on top of him, and swam hard for the shore. The life vest hadn’t been very effective before, but now it helped to hold Gideon’s head above water, even when Hutch’s slipped below the surface. The tangle of trees stretched along the shoreline forever, but there was a break, a small inlet with a clear stretch. He towed his mate there. The trip seemed to take forever, his doctor’s brain calculating how long it had been since Gideon’s last breath. He couldn’t give mouth-to-mouth in these angry waters.

The moment solid ground was under his feet, Hutch lifted Gideon in his arms and ran for the shore. The closer he got, the shallower the water, and the faster he went.

When he was clear of the waterline, he put Gideon down, ripped off his life vest, and began CPR. All the years he’d been a doctor, and nothing he’d done had ever been this important. Those prickles of fear returned, stronger now, squeezing like a fist around his heart. This was the kind of fear he’d spent his life avoiding, the kind that dug in and didn’t let go. The kind he couldn’t control or even tamp down. His heart beat faster, a wild thump echoing in his ears, a rhythmic shriek above the angry wind battering them both and the driving rain pelting them with drops that felt like bullets.

Desperate and terrified, he shouted encouragement above the roar of the wind and the scream of rain. “Come on, G. Take a breath. Open your eyes. Fucking live.”

Giving In (Awakenings 4)

Evan—A Dom in love with his vanilla best friend and enamored with a quirky older woman who enjoys submitting to him.

Daniel—Torn between two lovers, he doesn’t see why he can’t have them both.

Daniel and Evan have been together—without being together—for nine years. The best friends share everything—except their lovers. When Alaina Miles walks into their lives, all of that changes.

Alaina isn’t on the same page. Over a decade older, she has things they don’t—a cheating ex, a child, and autism. A second chance at love isn’t part of her life plan.

Queen of BDSM Michele Zurlo brings you a scintillating tale of compromise, self-acceptance, and taking a chance on love even when it could cost everything.

Excerpt 1—Alaina

I realized part of my skirt was still stuck around my hips. Thankfully it was long enough to still cover me to mid-thigh. I smoothed my skirt back into place and disguised how I used that move to wipe off my palms.

They were sweaty because I was nervous.

Daniel DiMarco wanted to have sex with me.

Sex.

With me

Handsome didn’t begin to describe him. Tall, built, sexy—these words were too plain to capture the charm and charisma oozing from him. Dark needed to be in there, too. From his dark brown hair to his deep brown eyes and his dark olive skin, everything about him dripped sex and sin.

Most of the women I counseled there spent part of every session swooning over him. Add to all those physical attributes the fact that he genuinely cared about the women and men who’d been victims of domestic violence, and you had a man who had his pick of sex partners.

He could be a cover model, and yet he didn’t seem at all vain about his looks. He took time with his appearance, sure, but it wasn’t excessive. He lacked artifice. Tonight, he’d taken down a man who was on the verge of threatening me so he could find and terrorize another woman. Then he’d fed me wine and the best chocolate mousse cake I’d ever eaten. Right now, he had a smudge of chocolate near the corner of his mouth.

And he wanted to role play that I was a sexy librarian who was going to seduce him. I convinced myself not to squeal like someone half my age and jump on him.

Well, I’d already jumped on him. Thinking back, I realized I’d made a fool of myself. Rather than judge me, he’d turned it into a fun experience.

And then he’d propositioned me.

Excerpt 2—Daniel

I shut off the lights downstairs as we headed toward the stairs that led to my loft. I gave my best effort to avoid looking at the sexy ass sashaying from side to side right in front of my face as she went up the stairs ahead of me.

But I’m only human.

Just a man.

A man who was immensely glad to get to the landing before he said or did anything stupid or inappropriate.

My urges illustrated exactly why Alaina would never be interested in me. On my best day, I was immature and constantly horny.

I’d left the door to my loft open, and I gestured for her to enter. “Welcome to my humble abode.”

I was a fucking dork.

She went inside and set her purse on the island counter. Then she looked around, sweeping her gaze from left to right. She noted my kitchen, the cutout where the bathroom was located, the corner that was my bedroom, the living room area with the resistance trainer off to one side, and the elegant dining table to her immediate right. While my furniture was nice, it was modern. The table stuck out like a sore thumb.

Alaina made a thoughtful noise.

“I know. The table doesn’t quite fit the décor of the rest of the loft. It belonged to my grandparents, and I love it.”

She peered closer at the table. “It’s a beautiful piece and a great way to remember them.”

“They’re not dead.” I went to the cabinet and selected a bottle of red, which was the only bottle of wine I had. “They downsized when they retired to Florida.”

“Oh.” A light blush traveled up her neck and stained her cheeks. She clasped her hands together. “I misunderstood.”

“I worded it badly.” I flashed a grin to put her at ease. “How about you grab the mousse from the fridge?”

While she did that, I got glasses and forks. There was only a third of the cake left, so we could eat straight from the tin. Then I looked at Alaina again. Beautiful face. Minimal makeup. Hair in a bun. Long, A-line skirt. Long-sleeved blouse with a bow at the neck. Smoking hot body clad in silky librarian clothes. She wasn’t the kind of person who ate cake from the pan.

I grabbed a couple plates from the cupboard, and in the spirit of maturity, I got out the wedge-shaped cake cutter. I measured out a good-sized slice and rested the cutter where I intended to cut. “Is this good, or do you want a bigger piece?”

She looked from the pie to me, a short laugh tinkling from her. “Daniel, that’s much too big.”

“It’s my mother’s chocolate mousse. Trust me—you’re going to want a big slice. I’ve been known to sit down and eat the whole thing by myself.”

She laughed again. Sliding between my body and the counter, she set her fingertips lightly on my wrist. While the heat of her touch made me want to lean in and put my lips on her exposed neck, she guided the cutter to a different spot. “This is plenty.”

Then she returned to where she’d been standing, well out of my personal space. I was reeling from the lingering scent of her perfume, and she didn’t seem affected. She was not at all interested in me.

Excerpt 3—Evan

I used to be suave with my flirting. Yesterday, I’d charmed a barista into throwing in a free banana nut muffin with my coffee. She’d smiled and twirled her hair.

The moment Daniel had come into the bar with the short brunette, I’d known she was different. First, there was the way Daniel treated her. She wasn’t arm candy or a temporary amusement. From the way he talked about her and the way he paid attention to her, I knew he liked and respected her.

She wasn’t his usual type. He liked tall, blonde women who commanded attention and adoration. Alaina was the exact opposite. The top of her head didn’t reach his shoulder. She exuded confidence even though she was visibly nervous. One look at her, and you could tell she was intelligent, the kind of person who was going to make a real difference in the world and probably already had to a lot of people.

Even her appearance was a study in contradiction. Her curly hair went in all directions. Wild and out of control, it was a marked contrast to her outfit. Daniel had been right—she was the perfect fantasy woman to play the hot librarian.

But the thing that had irritated me most was that Daniel hadn’t mentioned me to her. She knew almost nothing about me.

It wasn’t new that Daniel didn’t talk me up to a woman he’d fucked. They weren’t usually around long enough to become part of his life. But he’d known Alaina for a year. A year. In a whole twelve months, my name hadn’t come up once.

By contrast, he talked about her to me all the time. He was always saying how great she was, how wonderful and thoughtful and generous. Two weeks ago, he’d been almost enamored of her when he’d described the way she’d fulfilled his hot librarian fantasy.

Meeting her, I’d wanted to find her flaws. I wanted to unmask her as shallow and catty. But I’d been the asshole, and she’d responded by very nicely putting me in my place. In minutes, she’d settled into the group as if she’d always been there. Sophia and Bryn seemed to really like her.

“What’s wrong?” Daniel sipped his flavored water and kept his voice so that only I heard it. “Why were you rude to Lainie?”

“Lainie? Now you’ve got a cute nickname for her?”

He frowned. “Evan, I know when you’re not happy about something. What is it? What happened?”

Daniel and I had started our casual affair when I was sixteen and he was seventeen. We’d been together—without being together—for nine years. We were best friends. We talked several times every day, and we shared everything, big or small.

And he hadn’t mentioned me to Alaina.

Indie writer issues: Distribution

Hey everyone,
I’ve decided to pull the Doms of the FBI series from KU and go wide with it.

Right now, I’ve canceled the KU renewal. I’ll be slowly getting those to all retailers, hopefully soon. With Owning Up and the Doms of the FBI series, I’m trying to learn Smashwords for distribution. It’s not the easiest or most user-friendly site. The terms of service and “help” manuals read like a nerd who doesn’t know when to stop talking. I can relate to that, being a nerd myself. But it does make you appreciate someone with good technical writing skills who knows how to be succinct.

Anyway, navigating that site for a publisher has caused me to grind my teeth, have nightmares, and yell at the computer so much that my dog won’t leave my side. She’s determined to make it all better for Mommy.

I was using Draft 2 Digital, but they refused to publish Owning Up because of “incestual acts.” They did not like that Lex and Stef fell for the same woman and had threesomes with her. I tried to tell D2D that Owning Up used to be published wide (authorspeak for “published at more places than Amazon,”) but they were having none of it. Then, when I updated the keywords for Re/Deemed (DFBI 8), they flagged it as pseudo-incestual because Lukas is a Daddy Dom.

I mean, really. I looked up the definition of pseudo-incenst, and it’s sex involving step-parents and step-children, who are not biologically related. So, with their very conservative interpretation of the Barnes and Noble, Apple, Kobo, etc, terms of service, I went looking elsewhere. D2D is user-friendly, but they seem to be prejudiced against Daddy Doms. I need a place that can house the whole series, and in Re/Defined, Jordan is also a Daddy Dom.

Instead of splitting my babies up, I’m looking for one home for everybody. I’ll miss D2D’s user-friendly templates and process, but I won’t miss their overly conservative interpretation of TOS from places that have housed either these specific books or books that are similar in nature.

I’m waiting on Smashwords to determine whether Re/Paired is worthy of wide distribution right now. If it decides it will distribute to Apple, Kobo, and BN for me, then I’ll use them. If not, I have publisher accounts at Kobo and BN, but I won’t be able to publish at Apple because I’m a PC kind of gal, and they discriminate against authors who don’t have Macs. I’m sure I could pay someone to do it, but Apple currently makes up about 12% of my sales–most of that AJ Stone, which is my MM stuff–so I’m sure I’d take a bath on it.

In other news, if Re/Deemed gets 891 more pre-orders, I’ll write more in the series. If not, then Re/Deemed will close out the series. I’ve loved writing it, but sometimes a moment has passed and we need to move on. I am working on Awakenings 4 (no title) and a new series that’s different from my usual work (still BDSM, so don’t worry about that!)

Re/Deemed (Doms of the FBI 8)

Brandy Lockmeyer feels like a failure.

Unable to bring down The Eye, an international crime syndicate, she’s left hanging when the FBI task force she commands is disbanded.

Her professional life is in shambles, and she long ago gave up on a personal life.

Being kidnapped and sold to The Eye would have destroyed anyone else, but it only makes Brandy more determined to destroy them.

At Redemption Center, a training compound for loyal soldiers of The Eye, she’s given to Bull, an enforcer who has earned the privilege of owning her. The enigmatic Daddy Dom names her ‘Firebrand” and puts her to work serving him.

When Lukas “Bull” Xuereb is called up to The Eye’s secret headquarters, Brandy seizes the opportunity to bring down The Eye from the inside. The twisted web of lies gets even more tangled when she falls for Lukas—and finds out that he doesn’t intend to leave there alive. With her life, her work, and a love she never saw coming on the line, she must try to save them both.

Excerpt 1:

His legs were so long that one step put him close enough to reach out and snatch her up. It definitely explained his six-minute mile pace.

Before she could process his intent, she found herself face-down over his knee. Though she struggled, he easily pinned her legs beneath one of his tree trunks. His hand pushed down between her shoulder blades, the large paw spanning most of her back.

“Let me go,” she demanded. She’d been around the BDSM community enough to know the rules, and they had not negotiated anything. “I did not give you permission to hit me.”

A wallop landed on her ass, the jarring impact echoing through the barren apartment and leaving a sting on her backside.

Brandy screeched and bucked in protest, but he had a firm hold on her, so she achieved nothing.

“I don’t need your permission,” He smacked her ass twice more. “You are my slave. I can do whatever I want, and nobody will care.”

Excerpt 2:

Bull jerked the shower curtain over his lower half, and confusion gouged wrinkles into his forehead. “Firebrand, what are you doing in here?”

Before she lost her nerve, she rose to her tiptoes and placed her hands on either side of his head. Because he was crouched to keep the shower curtain in place, he was low enough for her lips to reach his.

Brandy didn’t bother with a tentative foray for their first kiss. She swept her tongue along his lower lip. He froze, and she massaged her lips against his full, firm ones. A heartbeat passed. Then another. Twinges of electricity raced through her body and curled her toes.

With a groan, he came to life, returning the kiss in a way that meant he took it over. His arms wrapped around her, pressing her to his wet chest as he claimed possession of her mouth. That twinge became a surge, and her senses short-circuited. The whole purpose of her intrusion was forgotten as he swept her away on a tide of unexpected passion.

Then he ripped his mouth away and shoved her back so abruptly she stumbled against the sink. He faced her, chest heaving and anger masking any sign the kiss had affected him the same way it had affected her. “What the fuck are you doing?”

Drawing On Love, Mercenary Hearts

Lessons I learned growing up:

1) Take care of yourself. Anyone else will let you down.

2) People come and go. Mostly, they go. It’s best not to get too close.

3) Lying and stealing are acceptable survival techniques.

4) Hide anything important.

Determined to stand on her own, Jessica Zinn embarks on a journey that will bring her face-to-face to a past she’s forgotten and force her to confront the demons she still carries. Through it all, Jesse’s unwavering love is a beacon that inspires hope in her darkest hours—but is it enough?

Broken Love (Mercenary Hearts 2)

“I’d wanted the fairy tale, and somewhere along the line I’d forgotten that everyone in a fairy tale paid a price.”

Jesse: Four months after Jessica walked away from me, I returned to find that she’d removed herself from my life as much as possible—even from her art studio and storefront on the first floor of the SAFE Security building. She couldn’t run far since she was carrying my child, and one night of playing nice landed me in her bed. While it didn’t repair the broken love between us, it renewed my determination to win her back.

Jessica: Ending up in the back of Jesse’s truck while he was on vacation wasn’t what I’d intended, but it gave us time to talk in a way we hadn’t before. Now that he understood I wasn’t a submissive, maybe we had a chance to be friends and co-parents? I just wish I could stop yearning for his touch.

Goodreads Reviewer: Michele Zurlo gives us an in-depth look at the characters and weaves a story that is compelling and page-turning.

Goodreads Reviewer: Just when I thought it was safe to continue Jesse and Jessica’s story. OMG, Ms. Zurlo has written a fabulous part two to their story… [that] will having you cheering for this couple and leave you gasping for air as well… This is an amazing storyline with lots of fun, tears and suspense.

Goodreads Reviewer: If I could give this book more [than 5] stars I would – I think [the Mercenary Hearts] Trilogy for Jesse and Jessica is beyond Outstanding. Michele Zurlo has touched my heart with these characters while reading this book. I could not put it down.

Excerpt 1:
Jessica came in and closed the door. I didn’t need light to recognize her shape or the uneven walk she affected when she was tired. Without looking in my direction, she hobbled toward the rear of the room. Next to a closed door that led into a private bathroom, she stopped. She set her palms against the wall next to the door and leaned forward. Then she lifted to the ball of her foot and lowered down slowly.

In the middle of a party, she was taking time to do the exercises she needed to maintain strength in the hip she’d badly injured in a car accident.

I frowned. “Jessica, are you okay?” I knew she wasn’t, but since she wasn’t aware I was in the room, I needed to reveal my presence.

She froze. “Fine.” Her tone was as crisp and rigid as her stance.

If we were on better terms, I would have called her on the lie. Instead I came closer. “Were you sitting for too long?”

“I came in here for privacy.” The undercurrent of her statement said that this room belonged to her and I had no right to be there.

I glanced around at the generic space. Sure, it had cozy touches, but it still managed to be austere. “I didn’t realize this was your room.”

“Because there’s not a glittery, wood-carved sign on the door that says, ‘Jessica’s Room?’”

“Yeah. That’d clear up any doubt.”

“I’ll make one after I finish the order I’m working on right now.” Though she tried to swallow it, a small gasp of pain leaked out. She pressed the heel of her hand into her hip.

We hadn’t called a truce, but I was determined not to be a dick. Plus, I hated when she was in pain. The part of me that was still head-over-heels in love with her wanted to take care of her. That need overrode the images of her making out with that guy in the art shop.

I touched her hip tentatively. “Let me help you.”

In the half-light, I watched her eyes close and her face scrunch up in a grimace. “It’s just a spasm. It’ll pass.”

She’d once said that I had magic hands. Apparently anger won out over pain, otherwise she wouldn’t be giving me the brush-off.

Of course, she also knew that I was a Dom and that sometimes I couldn’t help myself. It was likely that she wanted me to take control of the situation. If she didn’t, then she could say so. I lifted her in my arms and carried her to the bed.
The fact that she didn’t protest was telling.

Excerpt 2:
She sat up as I came in, revealing that she wore my shirt. “You were gone a long time.” Her lips pressed together, probably quelling the urge to ask where I’d been.

“I called Dean.”

“Oh.” Her gaze flickered away. “I’m finished in the bathroom. I used one of your disposable razors for my legs. I hope you don’t mind.”

This woman was completely at odds with the portrait Dean had in his head. To reaffirm that idea, I took a chance on Dean’s question. If she wasn’t on SAFE Security’s insurance, I needed to know she was covered somewhere. If she wasn’t, I’d change that situation immediately.

“Jessica, Dean said that he tried to cut off your health care by firing you from SAFE Security.”

“Let’s not talk about any of that unpleasantness. I’ve landed on my feet, okay?” She rolled to her other side and pulled the covers up, signaling that she was finished with the conversation.

Nothing got to me faster than an uncooperative Jessica. I sat on the edge of her bed and eased the covers from over her face. “Who is paying for your insurance?”

Her chest heaved a sigh. “You are.” She didn’t meet my gaze.

I was meticulous about my bank accounts. I hadn’t seen an increase in money flowing to health insurance. Actually, my monthly premium cost had dropped a few dollars. “How?”

She chewed at her bottom lip in a rare show of nerves. “Maybe you should ask David? It was his idea.”

Now my curiosity was piqued. I peeled back the covers and lifted her until she sat up and faced me. “Darlin’, I’d like an explanation.”

“We’re married.”

Shock that she would marry anyone was superseded only by the fact of who she claimed to have married. How the fuck could she marry David? He was already married. “How? Did he divorce Brea and not tell anyone?”

She winced. “No, I’m married to you.”

Shards of Love (Mercenary Hearts 3)

“I’d wanted the fairy tale, and somewhere along the line I’d forgotten that everyone in a fairy tale paid a price.”

All Jessica ever wanted was a family.

When the unthinkable happens, Jessica finds herself adrift in a sea of grief. It’s going to take everything she has to pull her life together and fight for the life she wants.

Goodreads Reviewer: This, this was an emotional rollercoaster. I ugly cried, I was angry, I laughed (caught me off guard too!), and by the end I was so freakin’ happy, I could’ve burst!

Goodreads Reviewer: ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL! That is the best way I can describe the trilogy that makes up Jesse and Jessica’s story. In fact I can easily say, hands down, this trilogy is in my top 5 for 2018. Ms. Zurlo has totally outdone herself by writing a story that is so exciting, relevant and emotional that it will leave you breathless, teary eyed and over the moon as you follow along.

Warning: Bondage, D/s, rape (not romanticized)

Excerpt:
“Brat, that’s enough. Jesse didn’t do this job for the money. None of us do. We do this because we know we make a positive difference in this world.”

“Bullshit,” she sneered. “You aren’t fooling anyone.” She slammed the heels of her palms into my chest.

This was different from when she’d slapped me before. She’d been stunned by her reaction as much as I had, and I saw immediately that she hadn’t meant to hit me as much as she’d wanted to smack away the information.

But now she was attacking me. She was in pain and lashing out.

With a neat twist of my arms, I captured her wrists and pinned them behind her back. “Brat, I know you’re upset, so let’s take a minute to calm down.”

She struggled against my hold. “I don’t want to calm down. I’ve been calm for months, and it hasn’t helped. I’m tired of being rational and good. I’m tired of feeling all this pain, and no matter what I do, it doesn’t go away. I’m tired of pretending for all of you that I’m fine when I feel like I died months ago.”

My heart broke at the raw pain written on her features and trembling in her voice. Without further thought, I lifted her onto my lap and held her against me.
Her whole body softened, and she melted into me. I cradled her head, and she rested her cheek against my chest. Her hand grasped at my shirt.

Though the wrong circumstances had landed her in my arms, protectiveness and pure joy surged through me. After all this time, we finally had more than a surface-level connection.

Excerpt 2:
David bypassed Brea and stopped in front of me. From his somber manner and Dean’s ashen face, a horrible realization dawned on me.

“No.”

He sat down next to me and put his arm around my shoulders. “Jessica, I’m sorry.”

“No.” I shook my head, denying anything he might try to say. None of it could be true. I shrugged out of his hold. “This isn’t funny, David. Where is Jesse?”

“He didn’t make it.” Dean’s quiet voice broke through my rising hysteria, arresting the flow of my emotions. “He saved Frankie by pushing her out of the plane, but he went down with it.”

“NO.” Shoving David away, I jumped to my feet.

Dean grabbed my shoulders, forcing me to face him. “We found his body, Jessica.”

When I tried to struggle away, he took my hand and put something in it. I opened my palm to see Jesse’s wedding ring. Tarnished with smoke and stained with dirt, it bore the inscription I’d had engraved inside: Love endures.

My brain stopped working. Unable to think or feel, I froze, my gaze pinned to the thick band of gold that didn’t hold nearly enough memories.

EXCERPT:

Brewer stood in the doorway, his gaze flitting over my face as he stepped inside my prison.

My heart spasmed — and that damn tingle between my thighs roared to life. I scowled.

Chin tilted up, I held his blue eyed stare, trying to focus on what he’d done, the family he’d taken from me, rather than the arousal he’d woken inside my core.

A twinkle lit his eye and twitched his lips peeking from his full beard — a beard that appeared silky, bringing to mind an image of his dark head between my thighs. Would his facial hair tickle? Scrape and mark my skin?

I swallowed and jerked my focus back up to his eyes, determined to keep silent no matter what he said — or did.

He caved from the silence between us first, expelling a heavy exhale, his shoulders relaxing the slightest bit. “What’s your name?”

“Eat shit.”

His lips quirked as though to smirk, but flat lined. “Bet you got your ass bullied for that name while growing up.”

“Fuck off.”

“I’d rather fuck you.”

My breath caught — and Brewer blinked as though his words had escaped unintended. He stood a few feet in front of me, doing nothing to hide the cock swelling inside his leathers. Long and hard…

The tingle of arousal morphed into pure wetness, dampening my panties in the span of a single breath as we stared at one another, our fogging breaths loud in the stillness.

“Goddamnit.” Brewer scrubbed a hand down over his face and beard while I attempted to swallow the dryness from my throat. He spun and left without another word, leaving my upper body unwrapped.

My arousal kept me warm for all of two minutes before my teeth began to chatter.

Fucking asshole couldn’t handle the sexual tension, the complication of what that brought to our situation. He fled like a pansy-ass.

Better that than rape me

“Fuck,” I muttered, eyes clenching shut against the thought of him thrusting into my body. My pussy spasmed, deepening my frown. I hadn’t let a man’s dick near me in over three years — and I wasn’t about to let some Stockholm syndrome make me lenient. No matter how fucking hot said man might be.

He’d killed my team, so given the chance, I would kill him.
